5 rising Hyperpop stars Charli XCX fans should check out this BRAT summer.

It truly is the year of Charli XCX as the pop star’s BRAT era continues to take over the internet and soundtrack the summer of 2024. Ms XCX has been the face of the Hyperpop movement for years. Quite what the term means still causes headaches for many music industry bigwigs but, largely, it’s brash production with lashings of autotune and a willingness to think outside the box.

The most ardent XCX fan will point out that the 31-year-old’s latest studio album is, if anything, a move away from the hyperpop world that surrounded her Vroom Vroom EP and the following scrapped project XCX World. Yet, for many listeners, it could well be the closest they’ve come to the trendy genre that has emerged in recent years.

As the BRAT summer continues, undr the radar cherry picks five ‘hyperpop’ artists you need to check out if you can’t get enough of Charli XCX.

RYL0

Must listen track - ‘Everywhere I Go (Around The World)’

We’d love to hear them on the BRAT remix of - ‘B2b’

In many ways, RYLO is becoming hyperpop’s worst-kept secret. The LA-based artist had been turning heads at the edge of the genre but is now finding releases readily playlisted and being blasted at clubs around the world. The rising star’s latest project ‘Last Resort: Beach Club’ sees the artist at her most fleshed out with features, samples, remixes and bountiful autotune, but there’s a discography dating back to 2019 that’s worth sinking your teeth into.

Nova May

Must listen track - ‘TROY’

We’d love to hear them on the BRAT remix of - ‘Spring Breakers’

Nova May has The Midas Touch in 2024. Everything the songwriter touches at the moment is turned into a grungy electropop hit as she rolls out a sizzling new era. You might have come across the Londoner two years ago on TikTok as her cheeky ‘last xmas (you gave me cocaine)’ remix did the numbers online. That BRAT attitude is still there today but on a new level. ‘TROY’ has echoes of Rihanna smash ‘S&M’ while ‘MR BUS DRIVER’ is a full-throttle soundtrack to a night out and ‘BOSH’ is her most aggressive slice of hyperpop to date.

Blusher

Must listen track - ‘Rave Angel’

We’d love to hear them on the BRAT remix of - ‘Talk talk’

Blusher are making waves all the way from Down Under. The three-piece trio from Melbourne were all solo artists before fusing together in 2021. The result is an ethereal take on the hyperpop genre that marks a group very much in their own lane. The Blusher discography is pretty expansive but if you’re arriving on their Spotify page as a Charli XCX fan then you’ve got to start at ‘Rave Angel’, which was inspired by Ms BRAT herself.

Maisi

Must listen track - ‘So Shy’

We’d love to hear them on the BRAT remix of - ‘Apple’

A self-confessed Charli XCX superfan, the influence of Maisi’s idol on her work seems to be getting clearer to hear with every release - and we certainly aren’t mad about it. The 23-year-old is at her most potent yet on lovesick banger ‘So Shy’ and last year’s ‘About You Now’ cover is criminally underrated. The singer has a penchant for cheeky lyrics and even appears to be cultivating her own pop DJ night on social media.

montykeates

Must listen track - ‘Unavailable’

We’d love to hear them on the BRAT remix of - ‘Von dutch’

Perhaps a curveball addition to the list, montykeates’ releases to date have focused on a more grungy rock sound than the world of hyperpop. However, we have a feeling that the artist is about to make a jump into a more electronic pop sound. From the short clip shared online, upcoming single ‘EASY’ sounds confidently his best release to date and is a surefire winner for fans of the heavier stuff on BRAT.
