Ben Ellis refuses to let summer die on feel-good new single ‘DEEP!’
The calendar may have ticked over into September but summer clearly isn’t over until Ben Ellis says so. On ‘DEEP!’ the singer/songwriter throws himself a lovesick pool party to revel in a new crush.
Last time we heard from Ben Ellis, the rising Welsh star was struggling to find his place on ‘No One Sleeps In Hollywood’, this year’s follow-up to 2023’s debut EP The Ed’s House. Fast forward three and a half months and the 22-year-old is armed with a sun-kissed new sound.
Written on his first ever trip to LA, ‘DEEP!’ showcases Ellis’ trademark guitar-led sound with an extra punch of catharsis. “When I hit the water, once just ain’t enough, I think we’re onto something,” he winks over the single’s chorus.
Where ‘No One Sleeps In Hollywood’ saw Ellis feeling lost in the capital of modern pop music, ‘DEEP!’ comes from a day of getting the most out of the City of Angels in the studio. Speaking about the trip to The Knock Turnal earlier this year, Ellis said: “LA is insane. It can be quite lonely if you don’t know the right people, I was lucky enough that wasn’t the case.
“Everyone is so positive and so amazing there, you go for a coffee and feel so inspired and ready to go and do everything. I don’t think I lost the novelty in that when I was there, I had the best time.”
Written alongside Joe Pepe and James October, with Finlay McDonald overseeing the rubber flamingo-led visuals, ‘DEEP!’ perhaps comes as Ellis’ most radio-ready release to date. The singer is well known for his eclectic influences, from hours of Classical FM as a child to musical theatre classes but on the track he leans into an early love for Ed Sheeran - the brilliantly simple bridge fizzing into a final earworm chorus as ‘DEEP!’ hits its peak.
